You’ll Finally Be Able to Watch the Toxic Avenger Reboot in Theaters

Finally, as January winds down, we have some genuine good news in this hellish 2025: Macon Blair’s Toxic Avenger is finally coming to theaters! The re-imagining of the 1984 splatter comedy from Lloyd Kaufman’s Troma Entertainment—never forget, it’s the place where James Gunn got his start—seemingly evaporated despite an enthusiastic reception at the 2023 Fantastic Fest. But thanks to Cineverse, fresh off its Terrifier 3 success, it’s finally coming to a theater near you.

Variety reports The Toxic Avenger will arrive in theaters in 2025—and just like Cineverse’s Art the Clown-starring smash, it’ll get an “unrated wide release.” Dinklage plays the title character (a janitor who accidentally transforms into a super-powered vigilante) in a cast that also includes Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Page, and Julia Davis.

In a statement to the trade, director Blair sounded understandably thrilled at having found “the perfect distribution partner” to bring The Toxic Avenger to the masses. “It’s so cool that folks will have the chance to see this in theaters, it’s a fun rowdy movie you wanna see with a crowd. Mutant hero smashes bad guys with a mop: perfect entertainment for the whole family!” he said. “Our goal was always to preserve the heart and spirit of the original Toxie (which was seared into my brain at a very young age) and try to make something that Troma fans would dig and at the same time do something with the character that feels fresh.”

There’s no word yet on The Toxic Avenger‘s precise release date, but you can count on it this year—with, we can only hope, some kind of appropriately repulsive novelty popcorn bucket to match?
